Pantone has been named the “Color Authority” and has released a new color-of-the-year based on design trends from various industries for over 20 years. When the Color Institute couldn’t find the perfect shade for 2022, it decided to create a new one! They describe the purple shade as “Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
At Omi Privé we have been incorporating lovely purple, blue-violet and periwinkle toned gems into our jewelry pieces for years. Gemstones that especially reflect the “Very Peri” hue include; purple sapphire, spinel and tanzanite, each highlighted below.
Purple Sapphire
Beloved for centuries as the ultimate gemstone, sapphire is part of the Corundum mineral family and is an ideal choice for everyday wear. With a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, sapphire of any color is one of the hardest gemstones aside from a diamond. Purple varieties of sapphire contain vanadium or chromium atoms in place of a small number of aluminum atoms within its crystalline structure, which leads to the purple color. A purple sapphire’s color can range from light amethyst, to lavender, to deep purple as seen in some of our jewelry pieces below.
Spinel
Found in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka and East Africa, spinel, as shown in the halo in the image above, comes in a variety of colors including oranges, pinks, blues, lavenders, mauves and vivid reds. One of the most under-appreciated gemstones, spinel is coveted by collectors and gemologists for its range of hues and spectacular optical properties. Spinel is a singularly refractive stone and is formed with cubic crystals similar to diamond, which gives this gemstone remarkable brilliance and fire. In the color of the year for 2022, spinel can be found in violet and bluish purple, to purple, or lavender, as seen below.
Tanzanite
Tanzanite is the bright blue-purple variety of the mineral zoisite that is only found in one part of the world; a 1.54 square-mile radius at the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Tanzanite’s appearance, as seen in the chain below, is influenced by a phenomenon known as pleochroism, which is the ability of a gemstone to show different colors when viewed in different crystal directions. Tanzanite’s color can range from a deep, rich blue to an intense violet. Tanzanite scores a 6.5 to 7.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness making it the perfect violet-blue gemstone for earrings or pendants.
